Law with Criminology BA Welcome Pack
Welcome to BA Law with Criminology 2023.
The BA Law with Criminology Programme gives you the chance to look at both subjects in context. In the first year you will study six compulsory modules, giving you a good grounding in areas of the English Legal System, Criminal Law, Current Legal Issues and the broad area of Ethics, as well as the Criminological areas around the Science of Crime, and Crime and Society.
In your second year you can shape the Programme more to your interests, and can choose optional modules including Child and Family Law, Green Crime, Human Rights and the State, International Policing and Crime and Punishment in England. Just note though that we can’t promise to run all these modules each year.
Your final year is your opportunity to really tailor your studies to your own particular focus. You have a wide choice of optional modules (subject to demand) including Sentencing and Penal Policy, Global Counterterrorism, Mental Health Law, Critiquing Criminalistics and Cyber Crime. You will also complete a Practice Improvement Plan, which we consider as the pinnacle of the degree. In it, you will decide on an area of legal or criminological practice which needs improvement, and design an intervention which will do just that – improve practice.
We hope you find the information below useful and look forward to meeting you in September!

Welcome and Induction Sessions
It would be lovely to meet you all before the formal start of the programme, so if you can, please join one of the BA Law with Criminology sessions below. You only need to attend one and not both.
In the session we will explain the programme in a little more detail and explain a little about how you can access the systems at UON. There will be time for questions too.
What you can do to prepare
Before coming to University, it is a good idea to get into the habit of reading a quality daily newspaper – in print or online – every day. BA Law with Criminology covers a range of fast-moving and up-to-the-minute topics which are frequently the subject of news coverage, and so the better you engage with quality news sources, the more informed you will be, and the better able to perform well on the programme.
You may be excited and eager to make a start and delve into your study of the Law; please do have a look at our Preparing to study Law Padlet, which includes some useful suggestions to help you get started.
