Biochemistry BSc Welcome Pack
Welcome to Biochemistry BSc – September 2026.
I am delighted to welcome you to the University of Northampton and to the study of Biochemistry. This is an exciting time to join us. Biochemistry is a dynamic and rapidly advancing field that explores the chemical processes that underpin all living organisms, helping us to better understand health, disease, and modern biological science.
This course will challenge you academically while helping you develop practical, analytical, and professional skills that are highly valued in research, healthcare, biotechnology, and industry. Throughout your studies, you will explore the molecular mechanisms that drive life, from proteins and enzymes to genetics, metabolism, and cell signalling. By the end of your degree, you will have developed a strong understanding of the biochemical basis of life and its applications in science and medicine.
During your first week, you will meet your personal tutor, get to know other students on your course, and explore our Waterside Campus and the many opportunities university life has to offer. Your studies will begin with a thorough grounding in chemistry and the key areas of biochemistry, cell biology, physiology, genetics, microbiology, and molecular biology.
You will study alongside students from other Life Sciences degrees, including Pharmacology, Biomedical Science, and Biological Sciences, and will typically have around 12 hours of timetabled teaching each week. Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops, practical laboratory classes, and online learning activities, providing a varied and engaging learning experience with plenty of hands-on opportunities.
We are also committed to helping you develop skills for your future career, including analysing and interpreting complex data, scientific and critical writing, problem-solving, and communicating information effectively to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Throughout your studies, you will be supported by a team of expert scientists who are actively engaged in cutting-edge research within their fields.
I am really looking forward to working with you and welcoming you in September.
