University of Northampton and Santander launch new intern scheme to local businesses

Date 16.11.2015

The University of Northampton in partnership with Santander Universities is delighted to announce the launch of an innovative internship programme, designed to meet the needs of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Northamptonshire. Aimed at SMEs from any sector, the Santander Internship programme offers our students an opportunity to engage with businesses and understand the impact they can have.

Under the programme SMEs will be able to take on an undergraduate or a recent graduate, to work on a business related project or activity that improves their business performance for a period of up to 13 weeks. The internship is sponsored by Santander with the business contributing a maximum of £1,500 to cover the cost. All internships are designed to complement the learning and skills acquired by students and graduates as part of their studies whilst making a meaningful contribution to the business operation of the host SME: paying the student a tax free bursary for the work they complete.

Wray Irwin, Head of the University Centre for Employability and Engagement commented: “I am delighted to offer this opportunity for local SMEs to access subsidised internships through the University. I believe this scheme can add real value to local businesses; improving competitiveness, opening up the possibility of graduate employment, and addressing short term projects within businesses. The University is grateful to Santander for their support with this programme and hope local businesses will reap the benefits.”

Wray continued: “University students and graduates are eager and keen to learn and bring a new perspective based on the latest academic thinking that can enhance business performance. There is a vast pool of talent from which to recruit to meet most business needs.”
Small and medium sized enterprises who would like to find out more about the scheme can contact the University Centre for Employability and Engagement (UCEE) by telephone: 01604 892727 or email:employability@northampton.ac.uk.
