Social media savvy students takeover @UniNorthants

Date 6.02.2020

Each year, the University of Northampton’s marketing department hand over the social media reins to final year Advertising and Digital Marketing students – giving them hands-on digital advertising experience, to put their academic skills into practice.

This year, the student takeover team got top industry tips from the UON marketing team, as well as other local digital marketing experts, before getting to grips with content planning, creation and mastering the art of video pieces to camera.

The takeover team took the university’s social media followers through a whistle stop tour of all things student life at UON, from uni-hacks to campus food reviews, as well as profiling the recycling initiative – Up for the Cup – which aims to collect and recycling disposable, with a target of 160,000 cups in its first year.

Takeover student, Billy Little, said: “The student takeover was both an immensely fun experience and invaluable opportunity to put the academic theory learnt throughout the course of our study into practice. The week provided us with some excellent insights into the working life and daily challenges of social media managers and content creators.

“I think I can speak on behalf of all the students involved in the student takeover week when I say that it was arguably one of the greatest uni experiences we have and a memory that we will all treasure. Not to mention, it is going to look fantastic on our CV!”

Student, Katie Rushmer, said: “The Takeover experience was amazing! On the surface it was a great addition to a CV, but as an experience, it tested my skills working to quick deadlines and building video and social media skills in the process. The University Marketing team were brilliant in giving constructive criticism and guidance for us along the way.”
