Going through Clearing helped Carla fulfil a childhood dream

Date 15.08.2018

Realising her planned degree wasn’t the course for her anymore was no barrier to Carla Allen-Wright coming to university – she was just a few clicks away from choosing another.

Physiotherapy no longer felt right for Carla, but thanks to University of Northampton’s easy to use Clearing service, she simply switched programmes and is now in training to become a paramedic, as she had dreamed of years before.

Clearing allows applicants to find courses which haven’t been filled for the new academic year, and is also used by those who are applying late for a course, or if they are a mature student.

Of her ‘career wake-up call’, Carla said: “For the past two years, I was sure I wanted to study physiotherapy. But nearing results day, I was no longer as excited about it and I lost interest in the course. I entered clearing to achieve my childhood ambition to become a paramedic.

“Clearing was easier than I thought it was going to be. The step-by-step guide is easy to follow, and there are multiple guidance pages to help. It didn’t take long at all.”

Carla, who moved from Deeside to study at Northampton, is about to enter the second year of the three year BSc Paramedic Science course.

She added: “The course I am studying now is incredible; it was definitely the right choice. University is a second-to-none experience; I seriously recommend going to anyone and everyone.

“Entering through Clearing should not change your decision to go. You applied for university for a reason, so why give up so close to achieving your goal?”

The University’s Clearing website is now open, and includes details of all the courses that are still open for applications.

Would-be students are also invited to attend the University’s Open Day, which takes place on Saturday 18 August.
