Overview


The Postgraduate Certificate in Special Educational Needs Co-ordination and the Leadership of Inclusion considers learner diversity, including disability, special educational needs and disadvantage to address global priorities in education, such as inclusion and equity. The course develops your knowledge and skills to become a research-informed leader of more socially just practices and policies that support the access, participation and success of all learners across a setting.

Course Content


  • This course consists of two 30 credit modules. The first module – Identifying, Understanding and Coordinating Special Educational Needs and Inclusive Provision ( SENM044) addresses the professional requirements for Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENCOs) and those leading the support for individuals with SEN and/or disabilities and their families. Students examine theories of learning and pedagogy and use organisational data and other sources to critically evaluate existing provision. Indicative content covers:

    • Identifying individual needs in a range of settings and contexts.
    • Using data and evidence to meet a range of additional needs
      Collaborative working.
    • Ethics, data protection and safeguarding.
    • Change management.

    The second module – Leading and Managing Special Educational Needs, Diversity, Inclusion and Equality (SENM045) examines the strategic role of the SENCO and/or Leader of Inclusion to shape and lead the development of special educational needs provision in a whole setting. Students develop collaborative approaches to support staff and a range of different stakeholders to create effective partnerships to support inclusion. Indicative content covers:

    • The development of inclusive provision in a whole setting context.
    • The strategic role of leaders of inclusion and the inherent leadership responsibilities and the influence on provision across the setting.
    • Leadership qualities and characteristics.
    • Creating a sustainable impact in the development of inclusion in a whole setting context.

  • Applicants will need to possess one of the following:

    • Good honours Degree of a UK University, or
    • Good honours Degree from a recognised University other than in the UK, or

    Applicants who have recent professional experience of three years or more will be positively considered. In this case the applicants will be interviewed and must demonstrate suitability for the course by providing: portfolio evidence of significant professional engagement in education or services for children at graduate equivalent level and/or a piece of written text. This portfolio sets out details of the relevant career pathway of the candidate, including a summary of their specific responsibilities relating to children & young people in schools or other settings.

    In addition to the above entry requirements:

    • International students must present evidence of having IELTS with a minimum score of 6.5, assessed through writing and interview.

Postgraduate Opportunities


Successful completion of this course gains students 60 credits which can count towards the MA Special Educational Needs and Inclusion.
