After graduating from Kent University, I spent a "gap" year away from academic life. During this time, I worked partly as a volunteer at Stockton on Tees Law Centre, at times representing clients with families involved in the Cleveland Child Abuse cases and attending the Cleveland Child Abuse Inquiry, and partly for the Ministry of Defence at an USAFE base in Cambridgeshire. (The Official Secrets Act prevents me from saying more!) I returned to studying, and after completing my LLM at Exeter University, specialising in European Law, I was offered a tutorship there, with my chosen area of UK constitutional law. I worked at Exeter in the Law Faculty till 1995, lecturing, tutoring and supervising dissertations for both undergraduates and postgraduates. In September 1995, I followed my subject areas and an offer of teaching human rights law to the University of Northampton. Since being at Northampton, I have expanded my teaching and research interests further into human rights law and substantive EC Law. My interests in all things European have also led me over the years to be involved in taking various student trips to institutions of the EU and Council of Europe.

Outside of work, my interests include travel, especially to the Far East and Egypt, walking and sci fi.
