In the world of sports management, breaking into prestigious organizations like Manchester United is a dream for many. Divine Sharaunga, known to us as Divine, has made this dream a reality. This case study delves into Divine’s journey from a recent graduate in Sports Studies & Applied Social Care to becoming a Ticketing and Membership Executive at Manchester United, highlighting the pivotal role played by the Careers and Employability team in his journey.

Can you tell us about your new position and the interview/application process?

My love for sports is deeply rooted in my childhood, having played academy football and basketball for local clubs and schools. Pursuing a degree in Sports Studies & Applied Social Care was a deliberate choice to blend my passion with a professional career. After my studies, I dedicated myself to expanding my professional network, joining various groups, and soaking up as much knowledge and experience from workshops and interactive sessions as possible. The journey to land my role at Manchester United was nothing short of demanding. It began with a detailed application process, progressed through multiple stages of interviews—both online and in-person, included a practical skills assessment, and culminated in an observational work experience day. Each phase was designed to challenge and evaluate my competencies, from my communication skills to my practical understanding of sports management.

How did Student Futures support you?

Reflecting on the support I received, the online meetings with staff members stand out as particularly beneficial. These sessions, where we could share screens and walk through potential interview scenarios and questions, were instrumental in my preparation. They not only prepared me for the kinds of questions and challenges I would face but also bolstered my confidence significantly.

I cannot overstate the impact that the Careers and Employability team had on my journey. I first encountered the team while completing the Changemaker Award, and from there, it was a relationship that significantly influenced my path.

How did the team help you?

The team, especially Michelle (Careers Development Consultant) offered me tailored advice on career paths and prepared me thoroughly for each step of the application process. Their guidance was a beacon that led me through the often-overwhelming world of job applications, making me feel prepared and confident at every turn.

What advice would you give to students and graduates in similar situations?

To students and graduates eyeing similar roles or paths, my advice is to embrace patience and the willingness to step outside your comfort zone. Networking and engaging in meaningful conversations were pivotal in opening doors for me. It’s about seizing every opportunity to learn and grow, even when it pushes you beyond familiar boundaries.

What are your plans for the future?

As I look to the future with Manchester United, I am excited about the prospects for progression. The club’s commitment to fostering improvement and career development aligns perfectly with my ambitions. I am eager to absorb as much as I can from this environment, aiming to explore further opportunities within the professional sports business sector as they arise.

My journey to Manchester United has been challenging but immensely rewarding. It’s a narrative of how determination, coupled with the right support—like that from the Careers and Employability team—can turn dreams into reality. I hope my story inspires others to pursue their passions with unwavering determination and to seek out the resources and support that can guide them along their path.
