Why did you choose your course at UON?

The course sparked my interest and as I researched more about it, I realised that it was unique and could only be found at the University of Northampton, which made it even more appealing. Additionally, I saw that there was a growing demand for professionals in the field of leather production and I believed that this course would provide me with the knowledge and skills I needed to pursue a career in this area.

What aspects of the course did you enjoy the most and why?

Having the opportunity to travel to other countries for classes, such as Italy and the Netherlands, and to visit different work environments. This was a unique and exciting experience that allowed me to see first-hand how the leather industry operates in different companies and I enjoyed learning about the different techniques, processes and cultures related to the production of leather. It also allowed me to meet new people and make connections with professionals in the field. Overall, the travel opportunities provided a valuable learning experience and broadened my understanding of the leather industry beyond the classroom.

Which, if any, skills and knowledge/understanding gained on your degree are most useful in your current role?

Leather materials, communication, problem solving, time management and attention to detail.

Did you complete a placement? Please tell us what your role was and an outline of your duties?

I completed a month-long internship in China as a Leather Technician. During my time there, my role was to assist the tanners in making their leather processes more sustainable and effective, by collaborating with professionals and colleagues.

Please describe how your placement benefitted you?

My placement provided me with valuable benefits, both academically and professionally. I gained a better understanding of leather processes, which has helped me produce higher-quality work in my studies and I developed skills in collaboration, project management, communication, and problem-solving.

What employability skills did you develop during your placement?

Communication, listening, leadership, teamwork, attention to detail, problem-solving.

How do you think the placement helped you to gain employment after graduating?

Networking opportunities provided during the placement allowed me to connect with professionals in my field, which later led to job opportunities and recommendations. It also demonstrated my commitment to my career and my ability to succeed in a professional environment, as the practical knowledge I gained allowed me to explain complex material to clients during my work.

Do you have any tips on applying or getting the most benefit from your placement?

Connect with your lecturers, as they may have information about available placements or be able to recommend opportunities based on your interests and skills. Additionally, attending relevant industry events, such as leather fairs, can provide opportunities to make connections and stay up-to-date on the latest news and internship openings in your field. Finally, be proactive in seeking out opportunities and expressing your interest to potential employers.

What advice would you give a student about to begin a placement?

Approach it with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Take advantage of the opportunity to gain practical experience in your field of study and be proactive in seeking out opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge. Also, make an effort to build relationships with your colleagues and supervisors, as they can serve as valuable mentors and sources of guidance throughout your placement. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek feedback, as this can help you to improve and make the most of your placement experience.

Did you do any extra-curricular activities while at UON?

Yes, I was a Malaysian Student Ambassador and Leather Technology class representative at the Malaysia Education Fair.

How did these extra-curricular activities enhance your career prospects?

Firstly, it provided opportunities to develop leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, which are highly valued by employers in various fields. Secondly, these roles often involve representing the University at events or conferences, which provided networking opportunities. Finally, this demonstrated to potential employers that I am committed, responsible and able to balance academic and extracurricular activities effectively, indicating a strong likelihood of future success in a professional setting.

How do you think your studies have helped your career or personal development?

My studies provided me with knowledge, skills and experience that are highly valued in my field. They taught me how to think critically, communicate effectively and solve complex problems. Also, my studies have helped me to develop a strong work ethic and time-management skills, which have been essential in my professional and personal life.

Describe your career progression so far, and any plans you have for the future. Are there any particular hurdles you may face?

My career has been focused on the luxury fashion industry (leather goods team), where I’ve gained valuable experience in various roles, such as being able to provide exceptional and luxurious customer service. My future plans include transitioning into the luxury marketing department, which is a highly competitive field, however I’m aware that a lack of experience in the marketing industry may be a hurdle in achieving this goal, so I’m actively seeking out opportunities to gain marketing experience and skills.

Actively seek out internships, volunteer opportunities, or part-time jobs in your field of interest to gain practical experience and make professional connections, and don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek guidance from professionals in your field.
