Research Profile

  • Daesh and Sectarianism in Iraq: a critical discourse analysis study of news sites reportage

To investigate how polar ideologies are discursively constructed in news reports of two conflicting online English  language news sites, AL-Jazeera published in Qatar, and AL-Alam published in Iran. What are the potential repercussions of such representations on the consumers of these newspapers, or simply, how and why could they influence the reader in opposite directions?

The research will also delineate Daesh’s (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) rise and growth, as constructed by these two conflicting newspapers.

Finally, the research will shed light on the historical roots of sectarianism, and the current reproduction of the opposing news within the news reports analysed.
