Recognise your local COVID heroes on our Power Tower

Date 18.01.2021

The University of Northampton’s Energy Centre tower is an important part of Northampton’s skyline, and now you have the chance to share a message of thanks for all to see on the power tower screen.

During the first lockdown, the Power Tower turned blue each Thursday evening as part of the Clap for Carers campaign, as the University of Northampton’s way of saying thank you to NHS workers on the frontline fighting the coronavirus pandemic, some of whom could see the tower from Northampton General Hospital.

The University is giving over the Power Tower to the community of Northampton, to share your messages of thanks.  From 8-9 pm, each Thursday, the impressive 26-meter-tall tower and the 12-meter-high screen will be lit with thank you messages from around the county, thanking local heroes, on the frontline of the fight against COVID-19.

Tree Behrens, who works at the University of Northampton said: “One of the bright spots in this pandemic has been seeing the way communities have been supporting and caring for one another, as well as the much-deserved recognition our key workers have received.

“It has been humbling to see the sacrifices people have made to keep the wider community safe, and so wonderful to see the lengths to which people will go to help and bring joy to others.

“We’re delighted to be able to give a bigger voice to the community of Northampton by sharing their messages thanking our local heroes on our Energy Tower screen – from the emergency services to emergency plumbers, teachers and childcare workers to care home workers, our University students and graduates and many more.

“It’s really easy to share a message, simply download our template and get creative. Perhaps you want to write thank an individual who has helped you, create a piece of artwork inspired by the pandemic, or write a short poem. We want to help you celebrate the local heroes who have made a difference to you, others and the community.”

To share a message of thanks, download the template here and email your completed artwork to mediawalls@northampton.ac.uk.

Please note we will not publish submissions that are not in the spirit of thanks, inclusion, and celebration of the outstanding efforts of those people working to support the community of Northampton throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
