Multimedia Journalism student Caitlin goes behind the headlines at ITN

A Multimedia Journalism student at the University of Northampton saw national television news in the making after winning a trip to ITN.

Caitlin Rosetti spent a day at the national news network’s London headquarters, where she sat in on key editorial meetings, worked with production staff, news editors and the graphics team.

She was also given a tour of the news studio, sat in the presenter’s seat, watched Lunchtime News broadcast from the gallery and saw how Social Affairs Editor, Penny Marshall, edited her report.

ITN Editor, Richard Frediani, said: “It was great to welcome Caitlin to ITV Network News, where hopefully she got a fantastic insight into our work.

“All in all, it was a great springboard to give Caitlin the chance to shape her views about a career in TV news.”

Caitlin said: “The visit provided me with a real insight into how a television newsroom operates and how much work is involved in pulling everything together –it’s reaffirmed to me that I want to work in broadcasting.”

Caitlin’s trip was her reward after taking part in a weekly news quiz set by Kate Williams, Subject Leader in Journalism and Media at the University.

Kate, who is also a newsreader for BBC5Live, said: “I am delighted Caitlin won the chance to spend the day at ITN gaining valuable experience and an insight into how a newsroom operates at the highest level.

“The Multimedia Journalism degree maintains very strong industry links and I believe students learn so much by practice.”

Caitlin added: “The support, encouragement and advice we receive from the tutors on the Multimedia Journalism course is brilliant.

“Each one has so much experience in the industry that you cannot fail to pick up the tips and tricks that you need to break into journalism.”

The University’s Multimedia Journalism course received accreditation from the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC) earlier this year, confirming it is relevant and responsive to the demands of the broadcast industry.

The course combines multi-disciplinary training in radio, TV, newspaper, magazine and online journalism with academic study and aims to provide students with professional skills in journalism suited to a world where communication technologies play an increasingly central role.
