Course Content

• Course Details

  The indicative content will explore the knowledge and understanding for reducing risks and vulnerabilities including:

  • Modern-day risks in society
  • Contextual safeguarding
  • Pandemics and emergencies
  • Trauma
  • Exploring the ‘lived experience’

  There will be a focus on promoting resilience of self and others, whilst recognising the impact of legal, ethical, moral, and spiritual needs and intergenerational cycles and exploring the skills required to consider and respect the views and opinions of others when managing challenging situations in specialist practice.

  Please note the modules shown here relate to the academic year 24/25. The modules relating to the academic year 25/26 will be available from June 2025.

  • Stage 1
    • Foundations for Evidence Based SCPHN Practice (HV/SN) (20 Credits)
      Module code: NURM131P

      Status: Compulsory
      This module provides students with the opportunity to develop understanding and progress towards proficiency in SCPHN practice (NMC 2022) through evidence based, innovative, analytical, reflective and pro-active approaches valuing human/children?s rights, to meet the health needs for Children, Young People and Families as individuals and as part of communities.
    • Therapeutic Approaches in Specialist Practice (20 Credits)
      Module code: NURM132

      Status: Compulsory
      This module will promote the effective development and use of and a number of therapeutic approaches, interventions and skills with an emphasis on the development of the therapeutic relationship. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on their own development whilst supporting the transference of skills to enhance professional practice.
    • Individual, Community and Population Health (20 Credits)
      Module code: NURM133

      Status: Compulsory
      This module prepares practitioners for working within public health settings, through developing critical awareness and problem solving skills, to address inequalities / inequities or gaps affecting health needs for individuals, communities and populations and design an appropriate intervention to empower a target population to improve their health and wellbeing.
    • Developing in Specialist Practice - SCPHN (HV/SN) (20 Credits)
      Module code: NURM134P

      Status: Compulsory
      This module enables students to develop innovative, reflective and pro-active approaches to delivering targeted and specialist SCPHN (SN/HV) services for children, young people and families as individuals and as part of communities. Students will also have opportunities to develop skills for professional relationships to promote effective partnership and interdisciplinary working.
    • Reducing Risks and Vulnerability through Specialist Practice (20 Credits)
      Module code: NURM135

      Status: Compulsory
      This module will enable students to explore a range of contemporaneous risks and vulnerabilities for children / young people / individuals / families and communities. Students will apply strategies and approaches to reduce risks and vulnerabilites and to lessen their impact on health outcomes through autonomous specialist practice.
    • Leading Innovative Specialist Practice (20 Credits)
      Module code: NURM136

      Status: Compulsory
      The purpose of this module is prepare students for leadership roles within specialist practice through the application of knowledge and skills in relation to motivating self and others through creativity and innovation of identified opportunities for change within teams/organisations

• Entry Requirements
  • Applicants will need to hold a 2.2 honours degree or higher.  Students who do not have a relevant bachelor’s degree must satisfy the University that by virtue of their professional standing, qualification and/or training that they are fit to register for, and to benefit them from, this module and will be considered.
  • Registered Nurse or Midwife with the NMC.
  • EU/Overseas qualifications can be accepted providing they are registered with the NMC to work as a Nurse/Midwife in the UK.

  As all students undertaking SCPHN need to be a first registrant with the UK’s NMC as a nurse or midwife, the applicant should already hold the relevant English Proficiency. Standard English Proficiency for PG applies.

  How often do I have to attend university?

  This module contains 6 taught days delivered at Waterside campus over a period of 12-13 weeks with opportunities for tutorial support.

  How is teaching delivered?

  Face to face in class at Waterside campus using an active blended learning teaching approach.

  How will I be assessed?

  This module includes an assessment strategy of a 4000 word case study.
