Overview
This module will enable students to explore a range of contemporaneous risks and vulnerabilities for children and young people, individuals, families, and communities. Students will apply strategies and approaches to reduce risks and vulnerabilities and to lessen their impact on health outcomes through autonomous specialist practice.

Entry Requirements
- Applicants will need to hold a 2.2 honours degree or higher. Students who do not have a relevant bachelor’s degree must satisfy the University that by virtue of their professional standing, qualification and/or training that they are fit to register for, and to benefit them from, this module and will be considered.
- Registered Nurse or Midwife with the NMC.
- EU/Overseas qualifications can be accepted providing they are registered with the NMC to work as a Nurse/Midwife in the UK.
As all students undertaking SCPHN need to be a first registrant with the UK’s NMC as a nurse or midwife, the applicant should already hold the relevant English Proficiency. Standard English Proficiency for PG applies.

What You'll Learn
The indicative content will explore the knowledge and understanding for reducing risks and vulnerabilities including:
- Modern-day risks in society
- Contextual safeguarding
- Pandemics and emergencies
- Trauma
- Exploring the ‘lived experience’
There will be a focus on promoting resilience of self and others, whilst recognising the impact of legal, ethical, moral, and spiritual needs and intergenerational cycles and exploring the skills required to consider and respect the views and opinions of others when managing challenging situations in specialist practice.
How often do I have to attend university?
This module contains 6 taught days delivered at Waterside campus over a period of 12-13 weeks with opportunities for tutorial support.
How is teaching delivered?Face to face in class at Waterside campus using an active blended learning teaching approach.
How will I be assessed?This module includes an assessment strategy of a 4000 word case study.
Fees and Funding
2026/27 Tuition Fees
- Part Time: £967 per 20 credit module
