The University’s Instruments 3.2b require that a student is nominated by the students of the University to be a member of the Board of Governors. The person identified as the President of the Students’ Union in any academic year is deemed to be the nominated choice of the students by virtue of the annual election process.

The President of the Students’ Union is able to bring an increased understanding of the operation of the University and its student life, however as indicated in Article 7.2, “Members of the Board of Governors shall not be bound in their speaking and voting by mandates given to them by other bodies or persons and shall declare any conflicts of interest.”  Thus the governor nominated by Senate is not there to represent or speak on behalf of students; rather they are “representative” as in “typical of” the University’s academic staff.
