Our Events Management Joint Honours course offers a practical approach to the successful management of a wide range of events. Experiences are at the heart of this degree course, so you will have the opportunity plan and deliver an event every year. There are numerous opportunities to engage in work placements, project work and to network with successful events businesses.

Our links with industry provide you with opportunities to gain valuable work experience alongside your studies.you can select two subjects as joint for stage one. You may then continue with equal emphasis on two subjects as a joint degree in stages two and three, or switch to a major or minor split. The degree title is derived from the two subjects.

Optional Study Trips

As a student on this course you will have the opportunity to join our study trip to the London Olympic sites where you will have tours of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Wimbledon as well as the opportunity to go down the ArcelorMittal Orbit slide. We also run an annual international study trip. Past destinations have included Istanbul, Poland and Barcelona. The study trip is optional and the cost in previous years has not exceeded £400 for flights, accommodation and local visits. You will need to allow an additional £200 for your expenses.

Course Details

Throughout this course you will learn the principles and theoretical frameworks related to events management and how to apply this theory in practice. You will cover the following course themes: logistics and operations management, risk management, health and safety, strategy, finance, event communications, project management, sustainability, economic and social impacts of events.

Our experienced teaching staff combine the academic aspects of the course with their own professional backgrounds in the events industry. You will gain a broad understanding of the core business knowledge needed in the sector which is supported by regular guest speakers from industry. The course offers a wide range of options to suit a variety of interests and aspirations.

Work Experience

Year-long optional placement year

All students are encouraged to take advantage of the optional placement year after the second year of study. Students have gained experience working at Silverstone Race Circuit, the Excel Conference Centre, Glastonbury Festival and Wembley Stadium. You will also have the opportunity to work in collaboration with the Students’ Union organising events for societies and other University-wide events. We have a strong emphasis on developing the key skills essential for employability in the Events industry.

A wide range of 12-month work placements can be arranged through the Centre for Work-based Learning within the Faculty of Business and Law, who hold databases from Events Industry Associations.

Career Opportunities

A wide range of opportunities are available for graduates within this growing sector. Event Managers are employed across many sectors of the economy including film, music and entertainment, trade shows, exhibitions, conferences, networking and social events, events agencies, PR, sports events, tourism, charities and the public sector. Some of our recent graduates have taken up roles at Silverstone, the De Vere Hotel Group, Communique Promotions and the Ricoh Arena.

Students graduating from this course can choose to progress onto a full-time, part-time or distance learning postgraduate programme. This will enable you to focus your studies in a specialist area or gain a general management qualification such as the MBA.

Course Content

You will develop a more professional approach to events management, and gain a broad understanding of the core business knowledge needed in the Events industry. You will have the chance to plan, organise and deliver a small-scale event on campus in order to gain valuable hands-on experience. Between stage one and two you will have the option to study a short work placement module, enabling you to gain academic credit for a summer internship.

Special Features

  • Many students choose to undertake work placements of around four or five months’ duration in the summer break or work on internships a couple of days each week. In between stage one and two you can complete a module which provides you with academic credit for this work experience.
  • We are building a student community and encouraging cross-year collaboration. Many first and second year students will volunteer to work at the final year student events. There is a Facebook page, for both current students and alumni, to encourage collaboration between all.
  • We invite industry professionals to provide you with their insight and experience as guest speakers, as well as involving them in your live client projects and allowing you to present your event ideas to them as external clients. This experience allows you to fully prepare for your career after graduation and allows you to make valuable business contacts.

We offer so many courses, it can be hard to choose just one. With a Joint Honours degree, you can study two courses, whether they are closely related or completely different. Depending on how much time you want to spend on each subject, your degree may emphasise one subject more than the other, which is a major and minor programme.
