Business Entrepreneurship joint honours looks at developing businesses from a practical perspective and focuses on issues and skills important to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). You will gain a grounding in business management and build your competence in management functions such as basic accounting and business modelling.

Attention is focused on the dynamic and visionary approach to businesses created by entrepreneurs and students are encouraged to explore for themselves their own entrepreneurial skills.

Optional Work Placement Year

You are encouraged to undertake a year-long placement in between Stages Two and Three of study. If you meet the entry criteria, and choose to take up a placement year you will find it an invaluable experience that helps you to apply your learning in your final year and prepares you for your career. We offer a lot of support in helping you to find a placement, which can be in the UK or overseas.

Course Details

The three stages of the course are built around an entrepreneurial stream, exploring key learning in business start-ups, business growth and development, entrepreneurial skills, managing opportunities and entrepreneurial marketing and strategy.

You will learn about the theory and the practice of operating in the modern business environment and will obtain the skills required to work in the industry of your choice.

Experiences are central to this course. As well as guest speakers, industry experts and experienced staff, you will engage in real projects where you will be pitching for real funding to enable you to carry out your business proposal.

Careers are wide and varied for graduates of this course. Some students go on to start up their own businesses soon after graduating, whilst many go into industry. Through the in-depth coverage of accounting, marketing, and business operations on this course, you will have developed a solid foundation for a career in general management of SMEs. The ethos of the course also encourages a creative ‘can-do’ attitude welcomed by organisations of any size.

Graduates from this course can also progress onto a full-time, part-time or distance learning Postgraduate course. Postgraduate study will allow you to focus your studies in a specialist area of your choice or gain a management qualification such as the MBA.

Our Enterprise Club is an on-site facility where you can meet and network with business people and entrepreneurs, attend short courses (many for free) and link up with fellow students. You are also encouraged to take part in any number of additional on-site business opportunities, networks and companies; these include pop-up markets, consultancy projects, placements, internships and student mentoring.

New York Study Tour

Visit New York!

You will have the opportunity to join the annual New York Study Tour, to network with a variety of businesses and large organisations, plus get a behind-the-scenes experience with business and marketing professionals. Previous visits have included CNN, a film production company, a branding company and a start-up food delivery company.

The cost for the 2016 trip will be £915 per student which includes flights, accommodation, breakfast, guided study tours, travel insurance and a trip hoody.

Joint Honours Study

If you choose to study a Joint Honours degree at the University of Northampton you can select a programme that suits your interests and strengths. This option opens up a host of possibilities to you, offering a wide range of opportunities for careers and further study at your fingertips. In the Joint Honours programme, you will select two subjects as joint for stage one. You may continue with equal emphasis on two subjects as a joint degree in stages two and three, or switch to a major or minor split. The degree title is derived from the two subjects.

With a Joint Honours degree you can ensure that your programme has:

  • Breadth: you are not focused on a single specialism, but are able to study across two disciplines
