Last updated: 11 October 2024, 4pm.
For the safety of student residents, the University of Northampton is currently unable to reopen the William Carey Hall at the Scholars Green Student Village following flooding on Sunday 22 September that forced its closure due to no power in the building.
We fully understand the inconvenience this will cause residents of the building and we are working hard to ensure the impact on those students is minimised as far as possible.
At the present time we do not know when the building will be available for residents to move back in but we will continue to update with new information when available.
To ensure that we can respond to any questions as quickly as possible while you are in temporary accommodation there are a number of ways you can contact us. If you’re at Waterside Campus, please pop in to Sunley Reception to see one of the team. Alternatively, you can email Residentiallife@northampton.ac.uk or use the numbers below.
- Telephone Waterside: 07740716593
- Telephone Scholars Green Student Village: 07740716592

If you decide to move from your current accommodation please ensure that you have notified us via one of the methods above.
We are currently assessing the damage to William Carey Halls of Residence, and will provide an update on longer term support arrangements as soon as we are able.
Access to personal belongings:
We are happy to facilitate access to your room in William Carey to collect personal belongings, but with our building safety systems currently offline, we need to ensure that you are accompanied and that the visit is as quick as possible!
Please go to the Student Village Reception at Simon Senlis Halls of Residence to speak to Residential Life or Security for assistance. Although we can help you enter the building at night, it is easier to navigate the building during daylight hours, so please bear this in mind when you attend.

I have enrolled and am staying in temporary residence, who can I contact for support or if I have any issues?
If the matter relates to accommodation you must contact the Residential Life or Accommodation teams using the email below.
- For any accommodation related queries please contact the Accommodation Team at: accommodation@northampton.ac.uk.
- For any Halls of Residence related queries please contact the Residential Life Team at: residentiallife@northampton.ac.uk.
For academic matters, please contact the ISS team and your Personal Academic Tutor, if you haven’t already, to let them know of your situation and they can provide guidance. We will also need your temporary address to update our records. For any immigration related questions please contact the ISS team at compliance@northampton.ac.uk or telephone us at 01604 893113. Our telephone advice line is open on Monday and from Wednesday to Friday between 11am and 2pm. On Tuesdays you can telephone us between 11am and 1pm.
I am unable to attend my timetabled classes due to my accommodation issue, do I need to let anyone know about this?
Please contact your Personal Academic Tutor to explain which timetabled classes you will miss and the reason for your non-attendance. Please also contact the ISS team at compliance@northampton.ac.uk to share this information. Failure to notify your Personal Academic Tutor and the ISS team of your inability to class may result in you receiving warning emails about your attendance from the ISS team.
Do I need to inform the University of the address of my temporary accommodation?
Yes, please use the Student Portal (E Vision) to provide the University with details of the temporary address you are staying at. If you have a UK mobile number, please also share this information with the University through the Student Portal (E Vision). It is very important that you keep the University always informed of your address so that we can contact you in the event of an emergency.
I am set to arrive in the UK imminently and am booked to stay at William Carey Halls, what should I do?
We advise that, if possible, you delay your arrival into the UK for a few days to allow time for the University to assist you with making alternative arrangements for your accommodation in the UK. If you are unable to delay your travel to the UK for any reason, please do the following as you arrive in the UK:
- Collect your Biometric Residence Permit from the Post Office in Northampton town centre.
- Come to the Waterside Campus and complete your enrolment including providing your contact address in the UK and UK mobile telephone number.
- Access your timetable.
- Begin attending your timetabled classes.
What is the last date I can enrol?
The last date for enrolment is Monday 7 October 2024. In exceptional circumstances the University will consider extending the date for last enrolment to Monday 14 October 2024. If you think you will arrive after Monday 7 October and may need an extension, please contact us for guidance on international@northampton.ac.uk.
How can I access my classes?
If you can, please try to attend your classes in person. If due to accommodation related issues you cannot attend in person, please contact your Personal Academic Tutor and they will provide you with additional support for any sessions missed.
Can I stay with friends and family elsewhere in the UK? How will this affect my attendance record?
Yes, you can stay with friends and family elsewhere in the UK while the University arranges alternative accommodation for you. If at all possible, please try to stay with friends and family who live within a reasonable commutable distance of Northampton. As you are required to attend and engage with your course in accordance with the University’s International Engagement Policy, the University strongly advises that your permanent accommodation should be as close to Northampton as possible to ensure that you can access the campus easily and attend your timetabled classes.
I am trying to enrol online what should I put as my address?
Please enter the address for William Carey Hall. When you arrive in the UK, please use the Student Portal (E Vision) to update the address of your temporary accommodation in the UK.
Will this situation have any implications on my visa?
No, this situation will not impact your visa provided that you have enrolled by the last date for enrolment for your course. After enrolment, the University expects you to attend and engage with your course as much as you can and regularly update your Personal Academic Tutor and the ISS team about your circumstances. Please note that as soon as you have moved into your permanent accommodation in the UK, you must attend your timetabled classes and fully engage with your course. If you fail to update the University about your circumstances and/or fail to engage with your course this may have negative implication for your visa.

We’ve been busy making temporary accommodation – called Waterside Cabins – in Car Park 3 for students from William Carey Hall, Scholars Green Village, who need a more settled place to call home following the floods that forced the University to close the building.
The new cabins are comfortable, spacious and warm and will provide ensuite bathrooms, ample storage, a microwave, fridge etc. Students are already preparing to move in; they should be in their new home by the early part of next week.
See these photos to have a look inside Waterside Cabins.
We regret the disruption this extreme weather event has caused and wish to assure everyone that the safety and wellbeing of our student residents is our primary concern. We will provide further updates as soon as possible.
