Jon Finn – Joint Sports Studies and Health Studies
BA Sports Studies graduate Jon Finn is rubbing shoulders with some of the best athletes in the world through his work as a Sports Psychologist.
He is now working as a Golf Psychology Consultant to The Professional Golf Association of Great Britain and Ireland.
Jon graduated in 2003 and has since gone on to complete an MSc in Sports Psychology and is now studying for a PhD in investigating how the most successful athletes deal with moving from sports academies to first team environments.
After completing his MSc, Jon was employed as a Football and Rugby consultant for sports performance analysis company ProZone which works with many leading teams in the country. He was then employed by a professional football club for three seasons during which they won the league title.
At the same time Jon was also working as a Golf Psychology Consultant for The Professional Golf Association’s National Training Academy, and as a lecturer in Sport Psychology at Leeds Metropolitan University. It was whilst working as a lecturer that Jon decided to start his own consultancy and also expand his own expertise.
He used his consultancy skills to advise the England Rugby League Team, and a number of other professional football and rugby teams.
Jon now runs the successful sports psychology consultancy company Pre-Shot which boasts a wide range of clients including European tour professional golfers, premier league football managers and players, international cricketers and international rugby players.
A significant element of Jon’s work has been the development of a Golf App for the iPhone and iPad.
This helps players of all standards to create an effective pre-shot and contains the core elements of his unique approach as a Golf Psychology Consultant.
Jon has also subsequently refined his teaching methods and created range of golf psychology lessons and golf psychology books which guide the individual, through practice, to re-wire their thinking on and off the course. All the Pre-Shot products have generated excellent results with golfers of every standard.
John commented on his time at the University of Northampton:
“My lecturers had great experience in using sport psychology methods in the real world – not just in a lecture theatre or laboratory – which was extremely insightful. This in turn made it easier for me to transfer my own knowledge into the real world. I had a great time at Northampton both studying, playing sport – I helped set up the University rugby league team which is still going strong. It set me up with lifelong friends and the foundations of my current career. I am sincerely glad that I studied here.”
