Bryn Griffiths – FdSc Paramedic Science
Paramedic Science – Bryn’s Story
Twenty year old Bryn from Bedfordshire applied for Paramedic Science in 2012 straight after his A-levels, but was unsuccessful the first time around. He turned this into a positive experience by taking a gap year to build up his communication skills, returning more confident than ever.
“I was glad I didn’t get in first year around – I felt confident at the time, having just done my A Levels, but looking back I would have been awful. I didn’t have any communication skills. Going away and getting that life experience and being able to speak to absolutely everyone has benefited me greatly.
By applying again I demonstrated my passion, perseverance and commitment.
Supported by the University
The University has supported me greatly. The lecturers are fantastic – you can ask them anything – you have your personal tutor you can go to with any problems. Our mentors support us but push us to progress.
It is very intense as you are doing the work of the ambulance service – there’s nothing that they hold you back from. You literally go out to everything. We’re not paramedics yet, and we don’t know everything, so there are points where you get stumped.
There’s no two days that are the same, very much you have to take it as it comes, but that’s the excitement of the job. You wouldn’t want to do it if you knew what the day would bring. I don’t want it to end when I reach the end of my shift.”
