Jinhua Luo – Business and Management Top-up BA (Hons)
Why did you choose the University of Northampton?
I heard from alumni that the people here were friendly and patient, that they love to talk to you, communicate and share information. It is also a cheap place to live with low living expenses. I can also work part time easily here – I work in a Chinese restaurant.
What is your favourite aspect of your University experience so far?
The people here are lovely and will always give you useful advice on UK life. People like to hear about my country, too. My teacher is great and helps international students. He encourages us and helps us to build confidence. He also let me hold a one hour lecture so I could practice my English and also help translate for Chinese students – this was a valuable experience. My parents were proud. I also get to practice my English in classes.
How do you think that your study will help your career or personal development?
Studying a Top-Up degree means it will be easier to apply for a Masters in the U.K. Studying and living in Northampton gave me a chance to adapt to UK study and life.
Which skills, knowledge and/or understanding are you gaining during your degree that will be useful in your future career?
I can practice my English Language skills, especially after studying the PEP. I have also made friends in the UK and from other countries who have helped me to find a job, and also see parts of the UK, like Cambridge.
What extra-curricular activities do you participate in?
I like to play tennis and basketball and I enjoy Japanese animation. I joined an Anime Club at university.
What advice would you give to potential students interested in this course and career?
Don’t be afraid to speak English or worry about grammar and pronunciation, people are patient and mistakes don’t matter. Communicate with your teacher and ask for help if you need it.
Also, enjoy western culture – watch Netflix! It’s another cultural experience.
How would you describe the University of Northampton to prospective students?
Great support system for academic and non-academic issues. People are helpful.
How would you summarise your University experience?
It’s an interesting, totally new life. This was my first experience travelling outside of China and using a foreign language. This has allowed me to become more independent, from cooking to making friends, and mature. I have met people from different countries and experienced new ways of thinking.Find out more about the Business and Management (Top-Up) BA (Hons)
