Gowning, Dress Code, and Photography

Gowning and photography are both provided by an external company, Ede & Ravenscroft.

All graduating students attending their ceremony must wear a gown whilst crossing the stage. Students must wear the University of Northampton gown specific to the award they are attending the ceremony for.

Gowns need to be booked in advance of the ceremony using the online booking system. Ede & Ravenscroft do bring very limited spare gowns with them on the day of the event, but these cannot be guaranteed and will cost extra so wherever possible we would strongly recommend booking in advance.

Gowns are collected on the day of the event from the Creative Hub, where students will be provided with their specific gown and dressed for the ceremony. Ede & Ravenscroft will also be on hand during the ceremony to ensure students are dressed correctly before they cross the stage.

Gowns are returned after the ceremony to the Creative Hub before leaving campus. Students can purchase extended hire online should they wish to keep the gown for longer.

What to Wear

As the ceremonies are a formal occasion, students should dress accordingly. Trainers or jeans are not permitted and any students wearing offensive slogans on their clothing will be asked to cover up. If they are unable to cover the offensive slogans they potentially could be excluded from crossing the stage.

All students should be aware they will be asked to stand for long periods of time and climb a set of steep stairs to and from the stage. Additionally, the ceremonies can involve quite a bit of walking between venues and would strongly advise that students wear comfortable footwear suitable for the occasion.

National dress is welcome should students wish.

We would also like to remind students that the ceremonies are streamed live and watched worldwide. Students should consider this when deciding the suitability of what they wear for the event.

The ceremonies are a formal occasion so we expect guests to dress accordingly; we generally think of the dress code as like a wedding without the hats!

The ceremonies can involve quite a bit of walking between venues and the theatre contains quite a lot of stairs so we would always recommend comfortable shoes. Due to the large number of people at the event the venue can get quite warm, especially in the summer, so we would advise wearing layers that can be removed.

National dress is welcome should guests wish.

Photography can be booked in advance using Ede & Ravenscroft’s online booking website or their call centre, but it can also be purchased on the day of the ceremony.

Ede & Ravenscroft offer a variety of photography options and packages, which you can see on their website and in the sales displays available to view on the day on campus.

We advise that all photographs are taken before your ceremony where possible. Photographs will be sent out to students, using the address given, once the ceremonies have taken place. Please be aware that at certain busier times of the year your photographs could be slightly delayed.
