Northamptonshire Communities of Practice (NCOP)

Welcome to the new webpage for the Northamptonshire Communities of Practice; a partnership of individuals and groups who want to increase learning and understanding with and for people with dementia and their carers.

In October 2014, the Dementia Research Network at the University of Northampton was re-launched, after consultation with its members, as a ‘Dementia Friendly Community of Practice’. Our aim is to bring together like-minded individuals from across research, education, and practice to enhance the quality of care for people living with dementia and their carers in Northamptonshire and further afield.

The aim of the CoP is to engage with a range of stakeholders to develop an informed and effective workforce so that people with dementia and their carers have better outcomes. To do this, we:

  • Map knowledge and identify gaps
  • Co-ordinate existing groups
  • Problem solve and identify solutions
  • Share information and experiences
  • Document and report

We hope that the CoP will bring together like-minded individuals who have a passion for and are willing to influence the theory and practice of dementia care across Northamptonshire and beyond in order to improve the quality of the care experience for PwD and their carers.

Dementia Friendly Organisations Award

The University of Northampton hosted a Dementia Friendly Organisations Award for the first time in 2018. The award was open to organisations of any size (including local branches of national/international businesses and public and third sector organisations) across the county.

In order to apply, we are asked organisations to share with us an idea for how they might improve the way(s) they work with people with dementia and their carers. The organisation with the best idea (as voted for by a panel of judges) received the prize of a fully-funded intern (for 10 weeks) to put their idea into practice.

The award was won by Northampton Filmhouse to support and develop their dementia friendly screenings offer. Find further details of the outcome of the award.

Further information about the award is available through the brochure below. Any questions can be directed to
