Paying your Postgraduate Tuition Fees

It is important that you have funding in place before commencing your course. If you have not yet made arrangements for paying your tuition fees, or are still undecided, please see the available options below.

Postgraduate loan overview

Postgraduate Loans (PGL) of up to £11,570 in Academic Year 21/22 are available for students who enrol onto a full (180 credit) postgraduate course.

  • A non-means tested loan up to the maximum will be made available to students applying for a full Masters courses commencing in the 21/22 academic year
  • The loan will be paid directly to the student, into a UK bank account
  • Online applications for 21/22 are due to open at the end of June 2021
  • The loan will be available to students across all discipline subject areas for all full-time, part-time* and distance learning* Masters programmes
  • The SLC cannot release loan funds before your course start date

*Part-time and Distance Learning courses must be completed within a maximum of two years and payments will be paid 50% in year 1 and 50% in year 2. There are some exceptions to this when studying Part time and where no Full time version of the course exists, in these circumstances some courses can be studied over 3 years, please refer to the course finder on the web to confirm the length of study available for your course choice. Further information and eligibility criteria for Postgraduate Loans can be found on the Gov website.

These loans are a contribution towards the costs associated with completing a Postgraduate Masters course and can be used towards tuition fees or living costs as you decide. The loan is non means tested and will be paid directly to you, rather than the University.

As the loan is not sufficient to cover both your tuition fees and living costs, it is important that you have further funding available in addition to the loan, to ensure you can cover all your costs before starting your course.

Payment arrangements for students with a postgraduate loan

As your PGL will be paid directly to you in 3 equal instalments, payment of your tuition fee will also be due in 3 equal instalments each of which will fall immediately after the loan funds are released to your bank account. In order for the University to collect these fees automatically, you are required to register a Credit/Debit card prior to enrolment.

Information on fees, card registration and payment dates will be sent to you after your loan application has been approved.

Please note your PG loan funds will not be released to you until the University has confirmed your full enrolment to the SLC.

Payment options for self-funding students

Your payment options are as follows:

  • Pay in full before enrolment*
  • Set up a payment plan (25% deposit before enrolment followed by seven monthly instalments)

If you are paying in full, you can pay on our secure online e-payments system. At ‘Payment Type’ select ‘Advance Payment’. Visit our finances page to pay by bank transfer.

*Students studying full time and taking a 180 credit Masters Course who opt to pay in full before enrolment will be eligible for £500 fee discount. If you studied your undergraduate course at the University of Northampton you will be eligible for a 20% graduate discount on a full Masters course. Only one fee discount can be applied.

Instalment payments are available for fees in excess of £1,000 as shown in the table below. You will be able to request instalment payments at the pre-enrolment stage. Admissions will email you to tell you when you can pre-enrol – usually three or four weeks before your course starts. Payment plans must be set up via our online portal – the link will be emailed to you once you indicate you wish to pay by this method or you can request this in advance by calling 01604 892236 or 01604 892191.

Payment is by debit card or credit card only (all major cards except Diners and American Express). Once your payment plan is set up it will take 25% of your fee followed by instalments as below.

It is not possible to make instalment payments online or by bank transfer. Please do not make payments by any method other than the link that we will send to you.

  • September 2021 starts

    MBA, MA and MSc courses starting in September 2021 will require an initial payment of 25% of the full annual fee before enrolment. The remaining balance will be paid in seven (7) equal instalments between 1 November 2021 and 1 May 2022.

    January / February 2022 starts

    MBA, MA and MSc courses starting in January or February 2022 will require an initial payment of 25% of the full annual fee before enrolment. The remaining balance will be paid in seven (7) equal instalments between 1 March 2022 and 1 January 2023.

    May 2022 starts

    MBA, MA and MSc courses starting in May 2022 will require an initial payment of 25% of the full annual fee before enrolment. The remaining balance will be paid in seven (7) equal instalments between 1 July 2022 and 1 January 2023.

  • If you are being sponsored by an employer, please provide a sponsor letter (on company headed paper) or a purchase order by the deadlines below to avoid any unnecessary delays to your enrolment. This can be uploaded at pre-enrolment stage or emailed to
