NLive Radio shortlisted in national awards

Date 16.11.2020

Northampton community radio station NLive Radio has been shortlisted in the annual national Community Radio Awards.

NLive, which is run in partnership with the University of Northampton, has made the shortlist, which was whittled down from more than 460 entries from 90 stations from every corner of the UK.

The station has picked up the nomination in the Sports Show of the Year category for its Monday Morning Sports Show with William Oelrich, pictured.

The University’s Multimedia Sports Journalism course contributes to the show, with students in recent weeks reporting on local league football as well as interviewing key Northampton Saints players.

Course Leader, Marc Webber, said: “Our students learn how to be sports journalists by practicing the skills we teach. That’s why every week students from the course will be heard on the NLive sports show interviewing players and managers from Northampton’s wide range of sports, whether that be Premiership rugby with Northampton Saints, women’s football with the Cobblers or motorsport. So, it’s great to see this show honoured for the diversity of sport it covers.”

Martin Steers, Station Manager, said: “We are delighted to have been recognised among a large number of other stations doing great work across the UK.

“I’m so proud of William and all the NLive presenters for all the great work they do entertaining, informing and supporting our audience and community, we’re proud to be the local radio station serving everyone in Northampton.”

William said: “This year has been so surreal and to add this is another massive achievement and I can’t thank everyone enough for all their support.

“I love doing the sports show because talking about sport becomes second nature to me. It’s also great to connect with the local sports around Northampton and highlight community sports people might not know about.

“It also gives me an opportunity to volunteer at a fantastic radio station with fantastic people.”

Maxine Jones, awards director, said: “This year has been a challenge for the sector, but community radio stations have responded by stepping up engagement with their local communities, with more programming and innovative presenters across the country broadcasting from home.

“It is clear to see from this, that passionate presenters, volunteers, and staff are really there for their audiences. These local radio stations are truly at the heart of their communities.”

“We wish NLive Radio good luck and can’t wait to host the ceremony virtually next month.”
