Music graduates have plenty in store for record shop celebration

Date 4.04.2019

A band featuring graduates from the University of Northampton will be playing a much-loved music shop during a day devoted to vinyl records.

Northampton five-piece Lunaxis will entertain the shoppers flocking to Spunout, in Gold Street, during Record Store Day, Saturday 13 April.

The annual international celebration of record shops has enjoyed a steady increase in popularity since its inception in 2008, and sees record collectors make a bee-line for independent music shops in a quest to snap up limited edition vinyl released especially for the day.

Lunaxis, who feature Popular Music graduates Carly Loasby on guitar and vocals, and drummer Jamie Hyde, will play a short set in Spunout at 2.30pm.

Jamie said: “It’s definitely going to be a different experience for us to be playing in a shop during the daytime and we’re looking forward to performing our music in a new way, as we won’t be in full band mode.

“With us all being musicians, we are passionate about supporting live music and Record Store Day is a great way to connect with your audience – we are really looking forward to it.”

After hearing Lunaxis’ music online, Spunout owner Chris Kent was keen to get them booked in for Record Store Day.

He said: “I know from the musical tastes of our regulars that Lunaxis will be right up their street and will blow everyone away with their great melodies and vocal dynamics.”

He added: “Record Store Day is a big deal for us – it’s a celebration of our continued existence on the high street during hard times for shops, particularly music stores, thanks to the support of our great customers and the local community of Northampton, who we strive hard to serve.

“We are working towards a very busy day where a large number of music fans will visit the shop for the celebrations and the rare records that are released for the day.

“We’re opening at 8am and will have DJs and live acts throughout the day until 6pm – we hope everyone can join us.”
