Clearing 2015: Shelby secures a job seven days after her final exams

Shelby Hill secured her place at the University of Northampton via Clearing in 2012, secured a full-time marketing job just seven days after completing her final exams – and graduated with a first-class honours degree in July 2015.

“I applied through Clearing because I didn’t get my predicted grades,” said Shelby.

“I phoned the University of Northampton on the same day I got my grades, discussed the course I wanted to do and was enrolled on to it on the very same day – it was so easy.

“At first I was a little bit anxious that I wouldn’t be able to secure my place on a course, but the advisor was really supportive and reassuring, and it all worked out.”

“Prior to Clearing, I had visited the University of Northampton’s open days, and the place just felt right for me,” added Shelby.

“I felt comfortable talking to the lecturers. They really wanted to know about my situation, and it was the first university where I was asked my name, as opposed to tutors wanting to talk to my parents about figures and course fees.”

Within a week of finishing her final exams, Shelby started a full-time job as a Marketing Research Co-ordinator within the University’s Marketing department.

She believes her experience of working as a student ambassador at the University gave her the edge over other graduates who may have applied for the role.

“The University offers lots of opportunities to students to gain part-time jobs while they are studying,” said Shelby.

“I became a student ambassador and travelled all around the country promoting the University at UCAS fairs, which was really enjoyable.

“Having a degree isn’t always enough to get that job you want, so taking advantage of the work opportunities gives your CV a real boost and helps you to stand out from all of the other job applicants.”
