Professor David Baker
David Baker has over 30 years experience in higher education, as Principal and Chief Executive of the University of St Mark and St John, Plymouth and as Deputy Chair of the UK’s Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC). He holds a Chair in Strategic Information Management from the University.
David led the University through the process of gaining its own taught degree awarding powers (TDAP). He chaired the Transition Board that turned JISC from a public to a private sector organisation. David has written widely in the field of library and information science (LIS) with 18 monographs (and two more currently in press) and over 100 articles and book chapters to his credit. He has spoken at numerous conferences, led workshops and seminars and has undertaken consultancy work in most countries in the European Union, along with work in Ethiopia, Kuwait, Nigeria, South Africa and the Sudan. He has led a number of large technology-based projects in the sector both in relation to digital and hybrid library development and content creation for teaching and learning. His other key professional interests and expertise have been in the field of human resources, where he has been active in major national projects.
David is also a professional musician, being a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists since the age of 17. He has remained active as musician and musicologist, undertaking regular recital tours abroad and in the UK and has performed the entire organ works of J S Bach. He is a regular writer and reviewer of organ and choral music and recordings, and his book The Organ (Shire Publications) is a best seller in the field. He now focuses on teaching the organ – in 2011 he founded the Halifax Organ Academy, which aims to offer high quality tuition and support to organists of all ages and backgrounds within Yorkshire.
