It is increasingly common for academic staff to develop assessments that build up over the duration of a module. At the University of Northampton, these are known as Multiple Sub-Component Assessments (MSAs).

There are two types of MSAs:

  1. MSAs that are marked ‘by hand’, for example a series of reflective journal entries or blog posts
  2. Computer marked MSAs, for example a series of online multiple choice tests that combine to form one assessment item.

It is important for the sake of equality and parity for all our students, that where these assessments are used, the provisions of our Extensions, Resit and Mitigating Circumstances policies are all able to apply as intended. Staff seeking to use these assessments are therefore strongly advised to familiarise themselves with the relevant sections of the current Assessment and Feedback Policy in this regard.
