The students of the University of Northampton’s Popular Music Department are performing their first opera this June, under the tutelage of their choir master and musical director, Jasmine Shadrack, Senior Lecturer in Popular Music.
As the degree focuses on composition, performance and the critical analysis of popular music, their decision to perform Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, a heart-breaking love story, means that they have been trained as an adjunct to the course.
Jasmine and her choir are working in conjunction with The Royal Theatre to create a poignant and beautiful rendition of this master work. The costumes for the opera have been designed by Izzy Mundzik, a graduate of the university’s fashion department.
Tickets will be on sale soon so keep an eye out on the Royal & Derngate website.
