How do you move on after spending years locked up? When you no longer know, if you ever knew, how to be in the real world?
Being discharged from a secure hospital can be a moment of triumph and at the same time a rude awakening. Institutionalisation can affect you in so many ways, including ways that people without that shared experience may not recognise or understand. There is stigma and there is shame.
Volunteering can be a way back into the community and an important part of rehabilitation.
This talk was developed to help raise awareness of the challenges people coming out of prison and the secure mental health system can face, and how they can be given the support and opportunity to overcome them.
