Simon Sneddon, Senior Lecturer in Law, asks whether we have reached the point at which the wild African elephant can no longer be saved from extinction.

Should we admit defeat and devote funds to other species instead?

This lunchtime we will be discussing the plight of the African elephant, and the sharp decline in numbers over the last few decades caused by an insatiable demand for ivory. We will look at the UK’s attempt to ban the sale of all ivory, regardless of age and ask whether it is too little, too late. We will also consider the radical approach of abandoning wild elephant populations to their fate, and focusing conservation efforts on other species.
