Café Scientifique. ‘A female Dr on the female Dr’

Updated 11.10.2021

Thu 4 November 2021

17:00 – 18:30

The Bee Hive, Harborough Road, Northampton, NN2 8LR.

Open to staff, students, and members of the public.

The Café Scientifique team present their first in-person event in 18 months, presented by Dr Lorna Jowett, Reader in Television Studies, University of Northampton.

In a slight departure from previous ‘science for the price of a cuppa’ events, they are focusing on science fiction and the latest thinking in research around the media to show a broad range of topics.

In 2017, when Jodie Whittaker was cast as the Doctor in the long-running BBC series Doctor Who, the response of many was “it’s about time!” Doctor Who is almost always headline news in the UK, and beyond, and it serves as a high profile example of the successes, and the shortcomings, of UK television.

Lorna ‘trust me, I’m the doctor’ Jowett discusses how her lifelong feminism and a job working with media production students combined in their last monograph (Dancing With the Doctor 2017) continues to inform her latest project, a co-authored book about women creators of TV horror.

Tea, coffee and cakes will be available to buy on the night.
