After graduating in economics, went to work for a subsidiary of British Steel. M.Sc. in Marketing Management. Worked subsequently at BSC in Sheffield, TI Group in Birmingham and at The Alumasc Group plc, all in sales/marketing positions, culminating in the post of Marketing Director at the Building Products Division of Alumasc.
Moved into higher education in 1990 for a change of career.
