Research Profile

  • Gavin Douglas is a practicing high-end womenswear fashion designer and a senior academic. Alongside his own professional creative practice, Douglas has contributed to an array of global fashion industry projects and continues to remain aware of current changes and developments within the industry as a practicing fashion designer and scholarly as a senior university academic. With a range of professional qualifications and training in the fashion and textile industry, Douglas utilizes this knowledge and experience by continuing to design and create garments for private clients as well as by sharing and teaching these skills and knowledge to Higher Education Fashion students.

  • Gavin Douglas’ professional qualifications, training and experience within the fashion and textile industry have allowed him to develop a breadth of knowledge and skill surrounding contemporary fashion and textiles. Douglas has taught across several educational establishments within the UK and internationally and contributed towards developing fashion and textiles course curriculums; he has also designed, created and delivered his own independent fashion workshops.

  • Gavin Douglas has recently become active in researching equality issues within Art and Design Higher Education, particularly with issues that impact people of colour. Douglas works towards producing research informed solutions that establish clear and measurable support structures and strategies that work towards progressive changes against race inequalities within HE.

    Douglas sits on the Equality and Inclusion Forum at the University of Northampton, is the FAST Equality and Inclusion representative and is a Founding Co-Chair of the universities Global Ethnic Majority (GEM) Staff Network. Douglas is a member of Fashion Academics Creating Equality (FACE) and is an Academic Trustee of the Graduate Fashion Foundation.

    Douglas has gained a Professional Graduate Certificate in Post Compulsory Education and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Douglas completed an MA in Fashion at Middlesex University where he was awarded the Deans Academic Excellence Award for demonstrating academic and professional excellence.

  • Douglas’ multi award-winning designs have been seen regularly on the pages of the world’s most influential fashion and lifestyle publications, including Harper’s Bazaar, Tatler and British Vogue. Collections have been presented across various international catwalk shows and exhibitions including London Fashion Week – on schedule, Paris Fashion Week, Barbados Fashion Week and Caribbean Fashion Week in Kingston Jamaica.
