Interior Architecture and Spatial Design
Adaptive Buildings - New Uses - Creative Design by exploring Social Issues.
Our town centres have been struggling to cope with lifestyle changes that have affected their use and occupancy. Exasperated by COVID, the decline is well documented and recorded.
Our third-year students embraced this challenge for their Final Major Project. With the backing of the Northampton Development Team, the students took one important trading street in Northampton, Abington Street, first purposefully selecting and then designed new uses for buildings in this declining street. Then, through Primary and Secondary Research, they formulated a Feasibility Study to test their proposal before undertaking the complete design project presented to the development team in a future public exhibition.
Social and environmental design issues are embedded in the IASD course. The students’ design and submit to the Royal Society of Art International Student Design Awards with considerable success. This follows live successful student design projects in the second year to gain confidence and client contact experience.
