Overview


MBA Finance is a named pathway of our standard MBA programme. It is ideal for individuals who are progressing to finance-related positions at management and board level, as it equips learners with the knowledge and critical understanding of contemporary themes relevant to managing successful businesses, with specialist knowledge of finance.

It includes a variety of finance-related modules that are designed to improve technical and sophisticated understanding of financial matters such as corporate financing and risk management as well as investing and trading in global markets. This course is available Full Time with work placement option, September intake only.

    MBA Finance pathway equips you with the knowledge and critical understanding of contemporary themes relevant to managing successful businesses and prepares learners to become future entrepreneurs, business owners, and/or managers and leaders through critical engagement with the dynamic and disruptive international business environment that prioritise sustainability and ethical standards.

    The MBA finance pathway includes a variety of finance related modules that are designed to improve technical and sophisticated understanding of financial matters such as corporate financing and risk management as well as investing and trading in global markets. The MBA finance pathway emphasises the global dimensions of financial markets and sustainable business environment enriched by the recent academic research and is informed by real-world examples and recent trends in financial markets such as digital finance and cryptocurrency.

    Industry Work Placement Option

    You can elect to participate in a Work Placement – completing the modules ‘Career Futures: Employability Skills’ and ‘Work-Based Project’. The year in industry will develop your real-world experience and you will undertake an applied research project that identifies and provides a response to an industry-specific problem.

    Your placement will last between six and 12 months, must be appropriate to your level of study and should also be paid. We will support you in finding and securing a suitable placement opportunity, however it must be noted that placements are highly competitive and there is no guarantee of a placement offer being made by an employer.

    Whilst on placement you will attend two full-day workshops held at the University, and complete a work-based project on the organisation in which you are working.

        Status: Compulsory
        The purpose of this module is to introduce learners to current debates about the role of digital technologies in society and how they add competitive advantage to organisations. The module will consider where and how digital technologies are used to capture value from new innovations, enhance performance and deliver services.

        Status: Compulsory
        The purpose of this module is to enable learners to effectively utilise secondary data to inform organisational proposals and decisions. Learners will be equipped with the skills required to acquire, manage, analyse and apply qualitative and quantitative secondary data sets.
      • Module code: FINM074
        Status: Compulsory
        The purpose of this module is to introduce learners to the features of different organisation types and structures, and associated functions and processes. The module examines the strategic inter-relationships between business functions and processes, and the impact of these on organisational performance through understanding and interpreting financial information.

        The purpose of this module is to enable learners to devise an original research project associated with topics and themes from the MBA programme. The module provides opportunities for learners to identify, select and analyse secondary data in novel and innovative ways for applied research in business and management contexts.

        This module develops learners? critical understanding of financial systems and markets. Learners examine traditional finance theories and explore recent development in financial technologies to devise trading strategies and construct portfolios to suit investor preferences and risk appetite.

        This module explores the theories, knowledge, and financial tools entrepreneurs and managers need to start, grow and manage successful businesses. The module also enables learners to evaluate sources of finance and appraise approaches for managing and investing financial resources for long term growth and sustainability for a variety of businesses.

        Status: Compulsory
        This module equips learners to prepare financial statements and analyse key performance indicators to support decision making process. Learners apply managerial accounting principles in business communications and solving problems. This module enables learners to understand the link between CSR, environmental reporting and financial practices.
      • Module code: HRMM079
        Status: Compulsory
        The purpose of this module is to equip learners with the skills and confidence to successfully navigate the critical and analytical demands of master's level academic study. Learners will reflect upon their previous study experiences and learning transitions, situating these experiences in the context of relevant academic literature.
      • Module code: HRMM080
        Status: Compulsory
        The purpose of this module is to enable learners to recognise, develop and apply responsible leadership qualities and skills, in line with the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). Learners will consider how ethical and responsible leadership behaviours contribute towards creating ethically responsible organisations in dynamic organisational environments.
      • Module code: STRM085
        Status: Compulsory
        The purpose of this module is to introduce learners to the theory and practice of strategic decision-making in, and management of, organisations. Learners will analyse how the dynamic internal and external business environment impacts on the component elements of organisations, and how organisations seek competitive advantage through strategy and decision-making.

    *Only applicable to students studying MBA (with Work Placement) full-time on campus, directly through The University of Northampton.
    **Optional – not included in course fees and it is subject to government policy on international travel and COVID-19 restrictions

  • If you hold a first or second class honours degree from a British university or equivalent, you will be eligible to apply for this course. Work experience is useful but is not an essential MBA entry requirement, so long as you can demonstrate a clear passion and interest in business and/or enterprise.

    If English is not your first language, you must meet the following English language requirements:

    IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in all other skills.

    Additional costs

    You will have the opportunity to participate in the MBA business event in your first year.* The MBA business event is optional and the cost should not exceed £500 for flights and accommodation (if you are travelling from the UK). You will need to allow an additional £250 for your expenses.

    Please note: Additional fees, over and above your course fees, will be payable for the optional elements, for example for travel and accommodation for the Business Event or by the examination or membership bodies for membership and assessments associated with the qualifications.

    *Only available to students studying a full-time MBA on campus directly through the University of Northampton.
