This course is specifically designed to meet the needs of the international tourism industries, which are dynamic and fast paced. Now more than ever, the international tourism and hospitality industries needs a workforce who are qualified to manage destinations, attractions, resorts and hotels and this top-up degree will provide you with up-to-date industry knowledge and the opportunity to build transferable skills which are essential for management roles within both industries and related sectors.

Holders of HND/FdA Travel and Tourism Management qualifications (or similar UK and International qualifications) can apply for this course to gain a full BA Honours degree in one year.

Course Content


  • This course has been designed to contribute towards achieving the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goal: SDG15 of Life on Land.

    The International Tourism and Hospitality programme is designed to provide you with the strategic and operational expertise that you will need to successfully manage tourism and hospitality businesses in an international context. The programme incorporates an extensive range of management concepts related to tourism and hospitality, including consumer behaviour, strategic and project planning, people development and leadership, sustainability as well as operational and tactical responses to common business problems.

    The overall aim is to produce qualified, enthusiastic, and forward-thinking graduates. You will develop sound academic and practical experience of management in the tourism and hospitality industries to enable you to exceed the expectations of employers.

    What you will learn

    You will have the opportunity to study innovative modules such as the Tourism & Hospitality Business Consultancy where you apply theory to a live project and put your project management skills to practice, gaining valuable experience that will enhance your job prospects. The International Destination Management module allows you to analyse destinations in a variety of contexts (urban, rural, attraction, resort, regional, national and international) whilst incorporating industry best practice guidelines.

    Studying the Innovation in Tourism module will give you the chance to analyse the process of new product development and developments in the tourism industry through examining niche tourism products such as ecotourism, dark tourism, adventure tourism and cultural tourism. You will develop your academic and employability prospects through the Achieve Your Potential module, where you are encouraged to reflect and work on how you can develop your personal brand and skills to achieve your future career and academic goals.

    You will be introduced to the theory and practice of training and management in the Leading and Developing Tourism & Hospitality Teams module, and the Consumer Behaviour module will explore factors affecting tourist buying behaviour with a focus on cultural and social influences as well as the influence of reference groups. Finally, the Research Project module enables students to independently carry out an investigation of a current ‘industry’ or ‘sector’ issue related to their degree and their professional development by carrying out relevant research.

    Engage with our Industry Partnership Group

    Our Industry Partnership Group is made up of local, national and international tourism, hospitality and events management organisations, such as Marriott International, the Canal and River Trust, Whittlebury Hall and Markshall Estate.

    Our industry partners contribute to the programme through live case studies, guest lectures, and sharing their specialist knowledge as well as offering work experience opportunities and research projects.  Industry Partners are also involved in contributing to our bespoke Changemaker week programmes with mock assessment centres, panel discussions, workshops and research presentations.

    Our partners are core to how the programme develops, and they contribute to course and module development by being critical friends and enabling us to make the courses as up to date and relevant as possible, leading to our students being industry-ready when they graduate.

  • If you hold a HND/FdA Tourism Management or equivalent qualification then you will be eligible to apply for this course. We welcome international students that have an equivalent Diploma/degree and English Language equivalent grade 6 IELTS.

    If you have completed the ATHE Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism you will be able to progress onto our BA Hons (Top-up).

    English Language Requirements

    All International and EU students applying for a course with us must meet the following minimum English language requirements:

    • IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent) with a minimum of 5.5 in all bands for study at undergraduate level.

    Additional costs

  • How will I learn?

    We use a blended approach to teaching and learning at the University of Northampton, using a range of methods and approaches to share knowledge and support your learning. Our online learning platform offers access to course materials and resources anytime and enables you to engage beyond the classroom and learn in a variety of ways which enhances your digital capabilities.

    For this course you can expect taught study to be in workshop format, usually totalling 12 hours per week. We recommend that you spend 24 hours per week in self-directed study time.

    How will I be assessed?

    Your learning is assessed using a variety of diverse and innovative methods, such as live client briefs, video and poster presentations, electronic portfolios, research projects and written reports. All assessments are designed to be industry relevant and address real issues within the tourism industry and related sectors.

    Will I go on any study trips?

    In previous years students have participated in at least one optional study trip to a European destination. The cost of optional trips would not normally exceed £500 for flights and accommodation. You may need to allow an additional £100 for your expenses on the trip.

    Are there any special features on this course?

    The Events, Tourism and Hospitality team has excellent links with industry and local key players such as the Canal and River Trust, River Nene Regional Park (Nenescape), the Northampton Carnival Arts Consortium, Hilton and Marriott Hotels.
