Overview


The Advancing Practice in Action Module’s next intake will be in the 2024/25 academic year, therefore the next start date will be February 2025.   

The purpose of this module is to enable practitioners to develop professionally, enhancing skills and capabilities within their own clinical role.

Identification and exploration of the challenges relating to advancing practice is encouraged to support empowerment, continuing professional development (CPD) and reflection within and surrounding advancing practice in relation to self and others.

Course Content


  • During the module healthcare practitioners will be supported to address their own professional development needs in relation to advancing practice. Current role definitions and professional variations will be explored in relation to advanced level practice, with a focus on advancing capacity and capability within healthcare settings. Relevant legal and ethical issues will be explored alongside demonstrating advancing competence for CPD. Advancing clinical reasoning skills for positive patient outcomes will be studied whilst utilising evidence to support governance. The educating of others in unpredictable and busy practice environments will be addressed with consideration to clinical supervision and coaching in practice.

    Teaching approaches are varied, using an active-blended learning approach and include lectures, interactive group work, online learning activities, enquiry-based learning and blogging, and are delivered over 6 taught days.

    Students will be taught and have access to tutor support over one semester.

    There is one item of summative assessment which must be successfully completed to pass the module:

    • 4,000-word Reflective journal demonstrating personal and professional development in relation to advancing your own practice.

    The Module can be taken as a stand alone or a part of MSc Advancing Practice award; Postgraduate Diploma in Advancing Practice; Postgraduate Certificate in Advancing Practice or MSc Advancing Practice (Top Up).

    1. Applicants wishing to study at level 7 will ideally have an appropriate healthcare or bachelor’s degree with honours
    2. Current professional body registration qualification with NMC or HCPC (UK registered)
    3. Employed within a health and social care environment

    Students who do not have a relevant bachelor’s degree must satisfy the University that by virtue of their professional standing, qualification and/or training that they are fit to register for, and to benefit them from, this module and will be considered

  • 2024/25 Tuition Fees

    Fees quoted relate to study in the Academic Year 24/25 only and may be subject to inflationary increases in future years.

    • Module costs: £920 per 20 credit module
    2023/24 Tuition Fees

    Fees quoted relate to study in the Academic Year 23/24 only and may be subject to inflationary increases in future years.

    • Module costs: £890 per 20 credit module
