Welcome

As the Schools and Colleges Liaison Team, we are dedicated to informing and inspiring students across the UK about Higher Education. Working closely with teachers, careers advisers, students and parents, we offer both in school and virtual sessions designed to prepare students for the university application process and student life.

In addition to our talks and sessions we have a range of online resources and a calendar of subject specific events and activities.

  • Personal Statement Feedback
    Getting the personal statement right is important. It not only supports your university application but is a reflection of yourself. For students who have completed our Personal Statement session and have their first draft ready to go we will give you some tips and feedback on where to improve. We can only give feedback on courses we offer to ensure we give relevant advice.

  • We offer a variety of events and activities for school and college groups throughout the year both for specific course areas and for general advice, guidance and information. Please see below a list of events available for booking, any specific dates will also be listed for the 23/24 academic year:

    Acting BA performances

    Our Acting BA students hold free performances on campus, at external venues, and sometimes in your school/college, including pieces linked to your curriculum such as Shakespeare.

    Our next set of performances will be the Shakespeare in Schools Tour taking place between Monday 4 – Friday 8 March 2024. The productions this year are Much Ado About Nothing and Richard III. As usual these will take place in your own school/college. We will also be holding some free performances at the Royal & Derngate theatre on 16 & 17 May 2024.     Careers in Health

    An on-campus event in the Autumn and Spring terms; ; helping students discover pathways in the healthcare industry such as Nursing, Midwifery, Paramedic Science, Podiatry, Occupational Therapy, Biomedical Science etc. (Can also be run at your school/college as a roadshow event upon request.) Next event: 7 March 2024.

    Art and Design Portfolio Guidance

    Delivered at your school/college or as part of a taster day on campus, these sessions delivered by our academics showcase the best way to present a portfolio, what we look for in the application, and will show examples of our own students’ work to provide guidance.

    Audition Guidance

    Delivered at your school/college or as part of a taster day on campus, these sessions will prepare students for the application process on our Acting/Drama courses.

    Behind the Lens: Careers in Media, Journalism and Special Effects

    This on-campus event showcases the excellent industry facilities we have for our practical media courses, with students rotating through a series of interactive workshops to help them explore our degree programmes in: Creative Film, Television and Digital Media Production, Multimedia Journalism/Multimedia Sports Journalism, and Hair, Makeup & Prosthetics for Stage and Screen. Next event will be in the Summer term 2024.

    Careers in Computing & Games

    An on-campus event in which students will rotate through interactive sessions with our Computer Science and Games Design/Art/Programming teams, to explore career pathways and experience the university facilities first-hand. Next event Tuesday 16 January 2024.

    Careers in Education

    An on-campus event in which students will rotate through interactive sessions, learning more about pathways in the Education sector. Next event: 23 May 2024. (Can also be run at your school/college as a roadshow event upon request.)

    Acting for Contemporary & Devised Performance

    This practical workshop, held at your school/college or as part of a wider taster day on our campus, is delivered by the academic team of UON’s BA (Hons) Acting for Contemporary & Devised Performance Programme introduces students to contemporary acting and devising practices. Our team of experts can lead your students in workshops on: improvisation, devising skills, movement/physical theatre practices, voice, and audition preparation.

    Futures in Business

    Students will discover subject specific practical skills and how these can be applied to a future career in their chosen area of study. Subjects available may include: Advertising, Marketing and Entrepreneurship, Economics and Accounting and Finance, Business Management (all pathways) and Events, Tourism and Hospitality. Next event: Wednesday 13 March 2024.

    Futures in Justice

    Using real life scenarios our Futures events will provide students with an interactive experience of their chosen subject. Subjects may include: Law, Criminology, Criminal Justice Studies, Social Work and Politics and International Relations. Next event: 28 February 2024.

    Music Production course discussion and workshop

    This interactive session will involve a discussion around the course, some viewing of students’ lecture/performance activities, and a workshop exploring Ableton Live software and the Playtronica.com MIDI devices. Available upon request and can be hosted in your school/college on a date that suits you.

    Careers in Science

    An on-campus event in which students will rotate through interactive sessions, to explore career pathways and experience the university laboratories first-hand. Next event Tuesday 30 January 2024.

    Upcoming Events

  • Not only do we offer sessions aimed at students and parents, we are also able to offer a great deal of support and guidance to teachers and advisors from the schools and colleges that we work with.

    Our Annual Teachers and Advisers Conference is a free event, providing updates from within the HE sector for those who work with post-16 students. This year’s conference will take place on Friday 10 May from 9.30am until 3.30pm, at our beautiful Waterside Campus. The event is free of charge and will include a complimentary lunch and refreshments.

    We have an extensive range of sessions delivered by both internal and external speakers, including, but not limited to:

    • An update on the HE landscape – UCAS
    • Student Finance for 2024/25 – Student Loan Company
    • Update on Level 3 reform – Pearson and OCR
    • Supporting SEND students into HE – ASSIST
    • And a unique networking opportunity with our academic and student services teams

  • Every year we hold an open day during the week to enable school and college groups to attend and find out everything they need to know about studying with us. Once registered students can explore the campus as they would any other open day, and teachers and accompanying staff will have a designated area to work from and a free lunch. Our next Schools Open Day will take place on Thursday 20 June.

  • We understand that now, more than ever, time may be limited for any activity that is in addition to the curriculum.   • Our guest lectures are designed to inspire and inform 16 – 18 year old students on the range of opportunities open to them, giving an introduction to university study. Lectures last approximately one hour and will require an appropriate classroom space with access to a screen/projector. We also request that there are a minimum of 10 students per session. Please note, lectures may also be available virtually and are subject to availability.

  • Schools and colleges are welcome to access content available through our Skills Hub. The content has been put together by our Learning Development team, who offer guidance and tuition to all of our students to enhance their academic, mathematical and study skills.

  • We are pleased that we are now able to welcome school and college groups onto campus and will be resuming Taster Days in accordance with COVID restrictions at the time of booking. Please contact the team to book.

    Our Taster Days are aimed at students in Years 11, 12 and 13 providing them with the opportunity to experience of what university life is like. Our events are flexible and can be tailored to suit areas of interest. Activities on the day can include:

    • Student life talk deliver by a current student

    Taster Days provide your students with the perfect opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns that they may have before applying to university. Alternatively, we always welcome group visits from schools and colleges at our Open Days.
