Rafael, or Raf, is the President and Chair of the Board of Trustees for the University of Northampton Students’ Union.
Elected with a majority of 643 votes in a cross-campus ballot, Raf ran on a platform to enhance the welfare and wellbeing provision at the University of Northampton and works to develop a greater diversity of activity within the Union, with a particular emphasis on creating a welcoming environment that supports our International Students’ experience.
His role as President follows his studies at the University in the Faculty of Business and Law, reading Sports Marketing and Management, from which he graduated with first-class honours in July 2017.
Rafael interned for two years at Final Third Sports Media, a local PR and content creation specialist in the sport and leisure industry, contributing to projects including the 2016 Capital One Cup Match Day Programme and development and organisation of the Future of Sport Conference, an annual conference hosted in the UK designed to tackle contemporary issues and topics, vital to the growth of the country’s favourite games, pastimes and careers.
During his studies Rafael also devoted considerable time to the University of Northampton Stallions Football Club, elected as Treasurer for two years and Club President in his final year. In doing so Raf was responsible for the management of the University’s largest sports club, with a membership of 250 students, and its largest student budget, with an operating budget of £20,000 in advance of additional fundraising activities.
He is the most capped first team footballer in the University’s history and received the accolade of Sportsman of the Year at the 2017 University of Northampton Stallions Sports Awards, hosted at the Royal and Derngate Theatre.
Furthermore he represented the University of Northampton, as a delegate, at the Future Global Leaders of Sport Conference in Tampa, Florida.
Raf is passionate about the opportunities the Students’ Union provides for students, particularly sport, and the role these activities play in fostering friendships, positive team working, fitness and good health. When not found in the gym or the Students’ Union, he can be found keeping himself up to date on current marketing news and methods through journals, blogs and LinkedIn.
