Engineering student Maria Steffy has undertaken a work placement at Bearward Engineering, as part of this she also had the opportunity to attend a 10 day projects visit to India, which she cites as a milestone in her career so far.
“The experience I have gained during my work placement has given me the subject knowledge and practical skills I need for my career in the future. I really enjoyed the international trip as it was something much more high level than a placement student can expect to participate in. I was proud that the company had the confidence in me to represent them internationally.
I have found problem solving a challenge when it comes to working in the industry, but it is extremely interesting to find solutions which could make immense changes to the company and possibly increase its profits.
I have also been a student ambassador for the University, which has improved my organisation, timing and management skills and has also given me confidence to work efficiently in a group. I have also been a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) ambassador. My advice to students is to take advantage of all the opportunities that come your way and get involved in as much extracurricular activities as you can. All this will help equip you with the skills you will need in a work environment.”
