Journalism student Cali Sullivan is experiencing life on the both sides of the media fence. As well as completing her journalism assignments, she has also taken on an internship within the University of Northampton’s press office.
“I really enjoy working with the press team as ideas are often bounced around and everyone helps each other. Liaising with the media has been great fun and I have had so many opportunities to attend press calls, which have included meeting a number of high profile people, such as the Rt. Hon Lord Michael Heseltine. My internship has enabled me to develop my contacts book, which will be a great benefit when I graduate. My confidence has increased dramatically and being able to interview strangers has definitely played a major part in my development.
As yet I don’t have any set plans for what route I want to take when I graduate. However, all my experiences and my internship have left me with a number of options and choices. I am also the mother of a five year old girl – she is not my hurdle but my push. One of the reasons I decided to come to university was to show her that everyone has the potential to follow their dreams, whatever their circumstances.
The University of Northampton was my first choice and rightly so! I have made the most of all the opportunities I have been offered, as well as always putting myself out there and showing willing to take part. I have met numerous media moguls and journalistic representatives, visited BBC Broadcasting House in London, featured in the Guardian, interviewed industry experts, written copy for various publications and worked in a fast-paced press office. So my overall impression of the University of Northampton… amazing!”
