Supporting our students
Bassett Lowke Hall, Avenue Campus
Going to university often means living away from home for the first time — this can be both exciting and daunting. At The University of Northampton, we see it as our business to make sure you feel happy, comfortable and safe.
It is important that you settle in quickly, make friends and enjoy your life at the University.
We provide a complete range of student support services to help you settle in to your new way of life and make the most of your time both academically and socially.
Student Services are available from centres at both Avenue and Park campuses. You will find help and information is made available on many topics, through literature, computer based advice, group sessions and individual advice and guidance from our staff.
Student Services can provide information, advice, guidance, counselling and support on:
- Accommodation
- Additional needs - disability, learning, mental health, etc
- Careers and Employability Service - choice and progression
- Student financial matters and support
The University also offers a range of resources and academic study support.
Multi-Faith Chaplaincy
The University of Northampton has a team of part-time Chaplains appointed at the invitation of the Vice Chancellor in consultation with their respective churches. We aim to serve everyone at the University and work together as a team, and each has a special concern for members of their own faith or tradition. Occasional acts of united Christian worship such as the annual Carol Service are organised and we promote a programme of public lectures and seminars.

Childcare
For students with childcare responsibilities, to help balance your student and home life, we can provide information guidance and support on all of your childcare needs. You may like to contact Student Services early if you need information on childcare arrangements while you study.
Counselling
We aim to help students to reduce personal anxiety and distress by offering support at a time of particular stress or difficulty. This work is done in an atmosphere of acceptance and respect as we understand that it is difficult to confront personal issues and vulnerability.
We are experienced in helping with a range of issues including: depression, anxiety, bereavement, stress, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem and homesickness
We offer counselling to everyone, regardless of how small the problem might seem. If more specialist help is needed, then this will be agreed together and arranged as necessary.
Guidance & Information Centres
Your first point of contact with Student Services when calling in person will normally be the Guidance & Information Centres available at both Avenue and Park campuses. Our help desk staff can discuss your needs, give you appropriate information and advice or make appointments for you to receive specialist guidance and support.
Many students now choose to work part-time while they study, the Guidance and Information team run Jobshop, a service to help you take full advantage of the good opportunities for part-time work in Northampton.
Health
A range of health information is available from our guidance and information centres, including details of local doctors, dentists etc. A GP Surgery is provided at Park Campus for resident students and all students are encouraged to register with a GP close to where they live.
Joanna Lester, Student Mental Health Advisor, specialises in assessing how students' mental health difficulties affect their ability to learn effectively and suggests strategies to help overcome potential difficulties. Also addresses support needs.
