Halls of Residence parking permit
If you will be living in Halls of Residence at either Avenue Campus or Park Campus, you will not be permitted to bring your own car to the University unless you have a valid Halls of Residence parking permit. Northamptonshire County Council parking restrictions state that the University can only have one parking space per fifteen students living in Halls, so there are only a total of 110 Halls parking permits available each term. Please note that there is no student parking available at Belinda Ferrison House or St Johns House/Hall in Northampton town centre.
Only if you meet one or more of the following three criteria in a particular term will you be guaranteed a Halls parking permit for that term.
Criteria for being allocated a guaranteed parking permit:
- You are a Blue Badge holder (mobility impairment); or
- You are disabled and are registered with ASSIST; or
- You require your car for academic placements as part of your course.
Additional permits available after guaranteed permits have been allocated
If you do not meet the above criteria you will be able to apply for any remaining Halls parking permits (up to the limit of 110 permits available), but only if your non-University (home/family) address is outside the following postcode areas:
- All NN postcodes (except NN17 3**)
- All MK postcodes (except MK18 2**, MK18 3** & MK18 4**)
- CV1, CV2, CV3, CV4, CV5, CV6, CV7 9**, CV10, CV11, CV12, CV21, CV22 & CV23
- LE1, LE2, LE3, LE4, LE5, LE8, LE10, LE16, LE17 & LE18
Once guaranteed Halls parking permits have been allocated your application will be considered against the following ranked criteria:
- Personal health issues;
- No other permanent (home/family) address within the UK;
- Relatives with serious health issues;
- Other extenuating circumstances (full details must be given);
Circumstances will be taken into consideration on an individual basis. Please be advised that having a part-time job does not classify as a criteria for receiving a Halls parking permit. There is no guarantee that a permit will be issued even if you have criteria within the ranked list directly above, due to the limited number of permits available each term.
How to apply for a Halls of Residence parking permit
If you believe that you meet the specified criteria, you can apply for a Halls of Residence parking permit once you have received confirmation of your allocated campus accommodation.
The online application form for Spring 2014 permits is now available in the downloads section of this page.
Applications will be accepted throughout the year, but only a total of 110 Halls permits will be issued per term. Please be aware that there is a now a waiting list for Autumn 2013.
You must re-apply each term. There is no guarantee of receiving a permit in a particular term even if one has been issued in a previous term.
Successful applicants will only be able to obtain a permit for the particular term in which their criteria are relevant; e.g. if you have an academic placement in February and March you will only be able to bring your car to the University during spring term.
Cost of parking permits
The charging structure for successful applicants is as follows:
- £45 per vehicle per term (autumn includes Christmas vacation; spring includes Easter vacation; summer includes summer vacation); or
- £25 per vehicle per half-term (up to 6 weeks)
Payment will be required at the start of the permit period. Permits will be issued to individual students on a term-by-term basis and are non-transferable.
Blue Badge holders will only pay a £5 administration fee to receive an annual permit.
Motorbikes and scooters
Motorbikes and scooters/mopeds do not require a Halls parking permit for on-campus parking, but do require a barrier-access card (£5 administration fee).
Alternative methods of transport
Regular bus services run between the University's two campuses and also link to Northampton town centre, bus station, railway station, Moulton College, Northampton College and other parts of the town. Students travel free from campus to campus, Monday to Friday; with discounted fares available to the town centre and other locations.
Further information about travel and car parking arrangements can be found on the student travel and transport page.
