Academic support

​​The Centre for Achievement and Performance (CfAP) provides expert guidance and tuition on a range of academic skills. CfAP recognises that every student has a different approach to learning and offers various teaching methods and resources to reflect this.

CfAP offers drop-in sessions and bookable appointments at both campuses, the one to one appointments can be booked through the library help points. Mathematics and statistics support is also available via drop-in sessions, t​hese are open to any student on any course at the University who have a maths or statistics related query​.​

Study skills support

You can develop your higher education study skills with various study programmes.​

Flying Start

The Flying Start programme has been designed to offer support and development of your academic skills before you start your first year studies​. You'll be assisted by lecturers and students in a friendly and supportive environment.

The programme will introduce you to a range of academic skills and experiences including:

  • note taking and note making
  • working in groups to practice research skills
  • learning how to reference
  • learning how to build arguments
  • assessing a piece of work
  • making a group presentation

 

Study Skills for Academic Success

Study Skills for Academic Success is a programme designed to help you develop your skills​ including:

  • critical reading
  • taking notes
  • identifying and constructing arguments
  • essay writing
  • sourcing and referencing information

 

GCSE mathematics

This course can help you to improve your GCSE mathematics grade or gain the qualification for your professional development.

Skills tutorials

The online skills tutorials will help you to develop your academic skills at a convenient time. Each tutorial takes about 20 minutes to complete and you can work at your own pace:


 

CfAP ambassadors

Student ambassadors advise and guide other students who are studying the same academic school​. They offer support and practical activities for student groups, including learning how to process the content of lectures or how to approach assignments. They also offer confidential one to one support through drop-in sessions or online mentoring.​

Resources

RefWorks is an an online reference management, writing and collaboration tool. It allows you to easily gather, manage, store and share bibliographic information, as well as generate citations and reference lists.

Write-N-Cite allows you to add your RefWorks references to your work. Write-N-Cite is available on University computers or can be downloaded from the RefWorks website.
