Library

​​​​A library is located at both Park and Avenue campus. Self-service machines for borrowing and returning items can be found in both libraries. Library opening times vary throughout term time to support students with their study.

Borrowing

Students can borrow up to​

  • 12 one week or 3 week loan items
  • 15 equipment items
  • 5 DVDs or videos
  • 5 short loan items
  • 1 laptop

 

Taught postgraduate students can borrow up to

  • 20 one week or 3 week loan items
  • 15 equipment items
  • 5 DVDs or videos
  • 5 short loan items
  • 1 laptop

 

Research postgraduate students can borrow up to

  • 25 one week or term loan items
  • 15 equipment items
  • 5 DVDs or videos
  • 5 short loan items

 

Teacher training students can borrow up to

  • 12 one week or 3 week loan items
  • 15 equipment items
  • 5 DVDs or videos
  • 5 short loan items
  • 1 laptop
  • 15 school experience collection items

 

​Park campus library can provide

  • flip video cameras
  • digital voice recorders

 

Avenue campus library can provide

  • data projectors
  • digital video and flip video cameras
  • digital still and SLR cameras
  • digital voice recorders
  • accessories including microphones and tripods

 

Access to other libraries

Research and final year students can complete an online interlibrary loan request form to request items from other libraries, including

  • books
  • journal articles
  • conference papers and proceedings
  • reports

 

SCONUL access allows you to access and borrow material from other univ​ersity libraries.

Reserving and renewing items

Items can be reserved online.

You can renew items by

  • using the Library Catalogue online service
  • taking the item, your library card or both to the self-service machines at either campus

 
Books and DVDs can be renewed up to 15 times unless they have been reserved by another library user. 

Equipment can be renewed up to 5 times. Laptop and Macbook loans can't be renewed.

Laptops and Macbooks

Laptops are available in both libraries from the self-service cabinets.

Macbooks are available to borrow from the Avenue library help desk.

Academic librarians

The academic librarians are professionally qualified staff who specialise in finding specific information. Each school has a subject specialist academic librarian who can help you find and evaluate information. The academic librarians can also give advice on using Northampton Electronic Library Search ONline (NELSON), as well as advice on subject specialist databases, strategies for literature searching and help with referencing.

A range of online videos and guides are also available on the Skills Hub.

Alternative collection arrangements

You can arrange for someone else to collect library materials for you. Email the library from the email address that is registered with the University as your main contact, with

  • your name
  • your student number
  • your home address
  • the name of the person who will be collecting your materials
  • the dates that this person will be authorised – for example from 17 March to 27 April

 

The person that collects your items must bring their own identification as well as your University identification (ID) card.

If you are on a course with limited electronic resources, or you have special circumstances, you will be considered for postal loans as part of the Extra Library Support and Assistance (ELSA) service.

Lost library items

If you lose an item, or you have already returned an item that is still showing on your account, email the library with

  • your name
  • your student number
  • the name of the item

 

Loan lengths and late returns

If you are taking out an item of equipment on a short loan

  • items must be returned by 10am the next morning
  • items borrowed on Friday must be returned by 10am on Monday
  • equipment can't be returned after 8pm

If you owe over £20 in fines you will not be able to borrow any items until your fines are paid.​
