My research falls into three overlapping areas.
1. Geographies of children and young people
- With Prof Pia Christensen (University of Warwick) and Dr Peter Kraftl (University of Leicester) I am co-investigator on a major three-year project (funded by ESRC) investigating children and young people's everyday lives in new and rapidly-expanding communities in the south-east of England. For more information, see our project website: http://newcitizens.wordpress.com/. I am currently co-editing a book (for Policy Press) entitled Critical geographies of Childhood and Youth: policy and practice.
- With Dr Peter Kraftl (University of Leicester) I have published a range of critical, conceptual and methodological papers reflecting upon the subdiscipline of 'Children's Geographies'. Our collaborative work is wide-ranging, covering everything from usefulness to sleepiness, participation to clumsiness, activism to roof insulation... All of which could be summarised as thinking 'Children's Geographies' in the wake of poststructuralism (and perhaps vice versa).
2. Spaces of service-provision, policy-making and participation
As a member of the Centre for Children and Youth (CCY), I have worked on more than thirty externally-funded research/evaluative projects addressing diverse services and spaces for children and young people. For example, I have worked on evaluative projects at seven Sure Start Children's Centres. With colleagues from Coventry University, University of Leicester and Keele University, I recently completed a major research project (funded by AHRC/ESPSRC) exploring pupil participation in school building (re)design and renewal policies in the UK. For more information, see our project website: http://wwwm.coventry.ac.uk/researchnet/dearg/projects/PupilParticipation/Pages/Pupilparticipation.aspx.
3. Everyday, embodied, emotional geographies
Recent, especially so-called nonrepresentational, work in social and cultural geography is the touchstone for all of my research. With Dr Peter Kraftl I am co-authoring a textbook (for Pearson) for undergraduates studying cultural geography. I am particularly interested in emotional and embodied geographies. For example, with Dr Faith Tucker (The University of Northampton) I recently completed a research project (funded by the HEA) investigating experiences of diverse disabilities in academic workplaces. We are currently developing further research in this area.
