Class of 2015: Sports graduate uses skills to help run multiple community projects

Date 23.12.2015

Johnny Yates, a BA (Hons) Sport Development graduate from the University of Northampton is now the Community Sport and Activity Activator for Northampton Leisure Trust.

After graduating in 2015, Johnny went on to work in the leisure industry and currently manages different projects, including one that helps to introduce women back into new sporting activities.

He also support other projects run by the Leisure Trust, including the National Play Day, Lings Open Day and Duston Day – a community project run by Duston Parish Council.

Johnny said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to manage a project of my own; in this case, a street basketball session. This has given me a chance to understand what more needs to be completed and thought about in order to run a successful sports programme. It was challenging to have a very large amount of responsibility but also extremely rewarding to see the success of the end product.

“I have enjoyed completing the advertising and market research for many of the projects, and I was able to utilise the skills and methods which I learnt directly from my University course.

“Studying has developed my career by providing me with an employment opportunity straight after graduating. My studies have also enhanced my knowledge and understanding of specific areas within my chosen field of work, subsequently equipping me with the tools I need to succeed.

“The majority of the knowledge I learnt during my University course has been useful in my work role. I would advise undergraduates that are interested in this line of work to undertake and make the most of practical work experience opportunities – these are a great way to understand the skills and knowledge required for your desired position/industry and a great way to network.

“The University of Northampton helps to inspire, challenge and develop you as individuals, and I would summarise my time there as supportive, diverse and an amazing life experience.”
