Leather students learn about re-tanning first-hand from Stahl Chemicals

Date 9.03.2016

Students at the University of Northampton’s Institute for Creative Leather Technologies (ICLT) had the opportunity to learn about leather re-tanning from Stahl Chemicals – a leading leather chemical company.

Stahl’s senior technologist, Mark Bartle, delivered the annual workshop at the ICLT on Park Campus from Monday 29 February until Thursday 3 March and demonstrated the wet techniques Stahl use for producing chromium-free leathers.

Student Catherine Garrod commented: “I found the course very beneficial as it was interesting to see that the right combination of re-tannage with different Stahl chemicals could create high-quality leather, with little or no chromium present in the system. Mark Bartle was very helpful to us throughout the week by guiding us through the recipes and answering any questions we had.”

Karl Flowers, Senior Lecturer in Leather Technology at the University of Northampton, commented: “The University is incredibly grateful for the commitment by the chemical companies, such as Stahl, as they provide useful value addition to the technical content of the course and provide helpful access to useful company contacts.”
