The iCon Environmental Innovation Centre, based in Daventry, Northamptonshire, was entered for the Awards by the West Northants Development Corporation which part-funded the development.

Clare Howe of Code Green and lead judge for Environmental Sustainability, commented:

This project stood head and shoulders above the rest, based on its approach from consultation, inception, throughout the design, construction and now use. Very low-energy use was achieved by getting the building fabric right, rather than relying on renewables, and using appropriate technologies.

The award adds to The University of Northampton's reputation as a national leader in promoting innovation in sustainable construction. Success in the regional Awards gives the iCon a place in the Constructing Excellence National finals, due to be announced on 25 November.

John Liddle, iCon Director, said:

This is a third award for the iCon, which demonstrates The University of Northampton's determination to achieve the highest standards in all we do.

The iCon Centre is also a finalist in the upcoming Northamptonshire Business Excellence awards where it hopes to see a repeat of its success at the EMCBE.
